It takes so much effort to communicate with them and they get so frustrated by not understanding what is being said the first time.  Hearing often is not fully appreciated until it is lost.  I encourage everyone to protect their hearing now while it is not impaired.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\"><strong>NATIONAL SAVE YOUR HEARING DAY<\/strong><br \/>\n\t\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">Each May 31st, National Save Your Hearing Day is observed. \u00a0It is important to take some time to learn ways to protect your hearing and that of your family. Our hearing is vital, and there are ways that hearing loss can be avoidable.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">There are various reasons from which hearing loss can be the result, some of which include:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">Age<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">Noise<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">Genetic<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">Illness<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">Neurological Disorders<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">Medications<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">Chemicals<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">Physical Trauma<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">Neurobiological Factors<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\">It is estimated\u00a0half of the cases of hearing impairment and deafness are preventable. \u00a0There are many effective, preventative strategies including\u00a0immunization against rubella to reduce congenital infections, immunization against H. influenza and S. pneumonia to reduce cases of middle ear infections, and avoiding or protecting against excessive noise exposure.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Verdana; font-size:16pt\"><br \/>\n\t\t<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 As a chaplain, I deal with many patients who are hard of hearing.
