{"id":352,"date":"2014-08-21T22:03:31","date_gmt":"2014-08-22T07:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/?p=352"},"modified":"2014-08-22T02:03:49","modified_gmt":"2014-08-22T11:03:49","slug":"august-21-surgery-waiting-a-journey-in-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/?p=352","title":{"rendered":"August 21 &#8211; Surgery Waiting, A Journey in Anxiety"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"shariff\" data-title=\"August 21 &#8211; Surgery Waiting, A Journey in Anxiety\" data-info-url=\"http:\/\/ct.de\/-2467514\" data-backend-url=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/plugins\/shariff-sharing\/backend\/index.php\" data-temp=\"\/tmp\" data-ttl=\"60\" data-service=\"gftr\" data-services='[\"googleplus\",\"facebook\",\"twitter\",\"reddit\",\"info\"]' data-image=\"\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/?p=352\" data-lang=\"en\" data-theme=\"colored\" data-orientation=\"horizontal\"><\/div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/hosp-waiting-room.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-353\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/hosp-waiting-room.jpg\" alt=\"hosp waiting room\" width=\"276\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This picture is not from our waiting room. \u00a0I am using it to illustrate the focus of this post.<\/p>\n<p>Today I had the experience of sitting at the information desk of our Same Day Surgery Waiting Room while I was waiting for a patient to arrive who had requested a pre-surgery prayer.\u00a0 Since I had been busy enough the day before that I had documentation to enter into our computer system I thought I would do the \u201cefficient\u201d thing and bring that material with me and enter as much of it as I could while I waiting.\u00a0 It sounded like a good use of time.\u00a0 While I was there many people had questions about how their patient was doing and came to me for answers.\u00a0 I was not able to give them information but I did direct them to the next cubicle where the person there had the information the people needed.\u00a0 One family did not know how to get to the holding room and need to be guided to that location.\u00a0 I took them to that area and on the journey was able to get them to discuss their anxiety and offer some encouragement and also a prayer.\u00a0 Then I began my normal visitation and met a family in the CVU waiting room.\u00a0 Their patient had come back from surgery but was being settled in the room and still could not have visitors.\u00a0 They were thankful they had a positive report from the surgeon, but still expressed they would feel a lot better once they saw the patient with their own eyes.\u00a0 Waiting is not an easy experience when our emotions are high.\u00a0 When I conclude a Waiting Room interaction and the people I deal with appear less anxious I feel good about the time I have spent with them.\u00a0 Waiting Rooms are not the only place where we experience anxiety.\u00a0 So I encourage you to take time and offer an empathetic listening ear the next time you see someone who appears anxious.\u00a0 Anxiety is often not hard to spot, the picture above shows one way people position themselves while they are waiting and attempting to deal with their anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This picture is not from our waiting room. \u00a0I am using it to illustrate the focus of this post.
