Private Practice Physician Or Hospitalist Physician"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"shariff\" data-title=\"August 22 &#8211; Private Practice Physician Or Hospitalist Physician\" data-info-url=\"http:\/\/ct.de\/-2467514\" data-backend-url=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/plugins\/shariff-sharing\/backend\/index.php\" data-temp=\"\/tmp\" data-ttl=\"60\" data-service=\"gftr\" data-services='[\"googleplus\",\"facebook\",\"twitter\",\"reddit\",\"info\"]' data-image=\"\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/?p=356\" data-lang=\"en\" data-theme=\"colored\" data-orientation=\"horizontal\"><\/div><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/family-practice-phys.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-357\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/family-practice-phys.jpg\" alt=\"family practice phys\" width=\"181\" height=\"240\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-358 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/hospitalist-phys.jpg\" alt=\"hospitalist phys\" width=\"230\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/hospitalist-phys.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Private Practice Setting<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<strong>Hospital Setting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today I had a conversation with a female patient and her husband.\u00a0 They were very positive about the care they received during the hospitalization.\u00a0 The husband volunteered their only frustration was the new system implemented several years ago where many Primary Care Physicians focus on their office practice and assign their patients to Hospitalist Physicians when the patient is in the hospital.\u00a0 They both agreed that they like having someone treating them who has known them and their medical history over a significant portion of time.\u00a0 It was pointed out to me that they had a hard time meeting a physician they had never seen before and then having the same level of trust in the evaluation of the situation as they would with their established Private Practice Physician.\u00a0 I understood their reasoning and have heard many patients describe the same feelings.<\/p>\n<p>I did explain to them the new system is a change that many people are slowly adjusting to over time and that I was sure our hospital would appreciate constructive suggestions on how the practice could function with a higher level of trust for the patient in what the Hospitalist Physician is telling them.\u00a0 The husband volunteered one suggestion immediately.\u00a0 He said he would like the Hospitalist Physician to consult with the Primary Care Physician prior to suggesting any treatment.\u00a0 In this instance he asked the Hospitalist if he had spoken with the Primary Care Physician and was told no he had not and they he did not see a reason to consult.\u00a0 The patient and her husband found this disconcerting.<\/p>\n<p>I told them I would share this information in our feedback system, and they appreciated my offer to do that.\u00a0 I noticed what happened during our conversation, since I had listened to their suggestion and affirmed their emotions a level of trust was established between us.\u00a0 The visit went on for 20 more minutes and covered a wide range of topics.\u00a0 When I was leaving the room following the prayer, the patient said to me, \u201cThank you for listening and seeing my concern from my point of view\u201d.\u00a0 As I entered the hallway I was struck with a sense of illumination, <strong>the patient thanked me for listening<\/strong>.\u00a0 Listening is an essential element of my ministry and I never expected to be thanked for that component of the visit.\u00a0 I learned again the lesson I learned in college.\u00a0 People feel you respect them when you listen intently and then respond to their statement in a manner that affirms their feelings even if you can\u2019t change what is happening.\u00a0 What a great reminder to have from a patient encounter that was a joy for me and also meaningful to the patient and her husband!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Private Practice Setting\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Hospital Setting Today I had a conversation with a female patient and her husband.\u00a0 They were very positive about the care they received &hellip;
