The Best Part of the Covenant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"shariff\" data-title=\"Sept 14 &#8211; The Best Part of the Covenant\" data-info-url=\"http:\/\/ct.de\/-2467514\" data-backend-url=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/plugins\/shariff-sharing\/backend\/index.php\" data-temp=\"\/tmp\" data-ttl=\"60\" data-service=\"gftr\" data-services='[\"googleplus\",\"facebook\",\"twitter\",\"reddit\",\"info\"]' data-image=\"\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/?p=422\" data-lang=\"en\" data-theme=\"colored\" data-orientation=\"horizontal\"><\/div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/win-win.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-423\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/win-win.jpg\" alt=\"win-win\" width=\"267\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Sunday School today we discussed the terms \u201ccovenant\u201d and \u201ccontract\u201d to learn how we relate to God and how we ought to relate to each other.\u00a0 In doing a word search I learned that the word \u201ccovenant\u201d is almost exclusively used in a religious context.\u00a0 Since I am trying to make this blog interesting to readers of all faith perspectives, I want to spend time with you today thinking about \u201ccovenant\u201d without putting it in the context of a faith community.<\/p>\n<p>At its root in a covenant there are two parties.\u00a0 Each party agrees to do something and both parties are intended to be better off working together than they would be working alone.\u00a0 Let\u2019s take this example: My friend needs someone to drive his children school because the time of getting to school conflicts with the time he is due at work.\u00a0 I agree to drive his children to school and ask that in return since I have no mechanical skills the father of the children will do repairs on my car.\u00a0 The father benefits because his children get to school safely and dependably.\u00a0 The driver benefits because he knows his car will be repaired when needed.\u00a0 For each of them this is a \u201cWIN-WIN\u201d agreement.<\/p>\n<p>In the example I have crafted above neither party is forced to share in the agreement.\u00a0 But both parties can have a high level of trust that each will hold up their end of the covenant.\u00a0 In my mind the mutual nature of a covenant stands out in stark contrast to some contracts where one of the parties is able to exercise some method of enforcement to make sure the other party conforms with the terms as stated.<\/p>\n<p>I feel all of us would be better off in our relationships if we approached them from the covenant model rather than the contract model.\u00a0 What do you think?\u00a0 I\u2019d love to hear your thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Sunday School today we discussed the terms \u201ccovenant\u201d and \u201ccontract\u201d to learn how we relate to God and how we ought to relate to each other.\u00a0 In doing a word search I learned that the word \u201ccovenant\u201d is almost exclusively used in a religious context.\u00a0 Since I am trying to make this blog interesting &hellip;
