Depression Brings another Tragedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"shariff\" data-title=\"Jan 4 &#8211; Depression Brings another Tragedy\" data-info-url=\"http:\/\/ct.de\/-2467514\" data-backend-url=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/plugins\/shariff-sharing\/backend\/index.php\" data-temp=\"\/tmp\" data-ttl=\"60\" data-service=\"gftr\" data-services='[\"googleplus\",\"facebook\",\"twitter\",\"reddit\",\"info\"]' data-image=\"\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/?p=593\" data-lang=\"en\" data-theme=\"colored\" data-orientation=\"horizontal\"><\/div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/depresion.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-594\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/depresion.jpg\" alt=\"depresion\" width=\"225\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/depresion.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/depresion-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My day began with some sad news.\u00a0 I had an email from a clergy colleague telling that a pastor had taken his life by suicide.\u00a0 He had a history of being treated for depression.\u00a0 My mind immediately went to how I felt in 2004 when I was diagnosed with depression.\u00a0 In my case I did not ever seriously contemplate suicide.\u00a0 But many people with depression at least consider suicide.\u00a0 And like the report I received today, some patients actually implement a plan that takes their life.<\/p>\n<p>The image I chose for this post spells out several words that are a part of the depression journey.\u00a0 Unfortunately many people with depression feel shame for not being able to deal with their emotions and overcome the feelings they experience.\u00a0 Depression itself is nothing to be ashamed about.\u00a0 How we handle it has a big difference in how completely we get our lives back together and move forward.<\/p>\n<p>In hospital life I periodically have the experience of talking with family members of a patient who has attempted suicide.\u00a0 These are always situations loaded with emotions.\u00a0 In the time following an attempt at suicide family members often wonder what signs they missed that things were so serious for the patient.\u00a0 Often times there are just no easy answers.\u00a0 I feel it is essential for people to know the symptoms of depression and encourage people we know who exhibit them to get treatment.\u00a0 Part of this encouragement can take the form of displaying a willingness to walk alongside them on the treatment journey.\u00a0 Knowing you are not alone and have a person you trust who understands I feel can make a big difference and potentially reduce the number of suicide attempts.\u00a0 Sure it takes time, but time is a small investment to prevent someone from taking their life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My day began with some sad news.\u00a0 I had an email from a clergy colleague telling that a pastor had taken his life by suicide.\u00a0 He had a history of being treated for depression.\u00a0 My mind immediately went to how I felt in 2004 when I was diagnosed with depression.\u00a0 In my case I did &hellip;
