{"id":871,"date":"2015-06-22T06:22:48","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T15:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/?p=871"},"modified":"2015-06-22T02:08:12","modified_gmt":"2015-06-22T11:08:12","slug":"june-22nd-the-trouble-of-a-former-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/?p=871","title":{"rendered":"June 22nd \u2013 The trouble of a former president"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"shariff\" data-title=\"June 22nd \u2013 The trouble of a former president\" data-info-url=\"http:\/\/ct.de\/-2467514\" data-backend-url=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/plugins\/shariff-sharing\/backend\/index.php\" data-temp=\"\/tmp\" data-ttl=\"60\" data-service=\"gftr\" data-services='[\"googleplus\",\"facebook\",\"twitter\",\"reddit\",\"info\"]' data-image=\"\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/?p=871\" data-lang=\"en\" data-theme=\"colored\" data-orientation=\"horizontal\"><\/div><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/june-17-watergate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-872\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/june-17-watergate-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"june 17 watergate\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/june-17-watergate-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cms.shelquist.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/june-17-watergate.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our image today reminds us of how one tragically poor decision brought down the Presidency of Richard Nixon.\u00a0 Since we focused on a fictional president yesterday it seemed appropriate to focus on an actual President today.\u00a0 When the story of the Watergate burglary became a national obsession one of the most frequently asked questions was, \u201cWhy would the Nixon campaign engage in such an activity?\u201d\u00a0 The polls from the beginning proclaimed Nixon would easily defeat McGovern, and that is what happened.\u00a0 By breaking the law and getting caught, events cascaded so dramatically that it caused Nixon to resign the Presidency in disgrace.\u00a0 The lives of others in his administration were also impacted very negatively.\u00a0 There is no way to score the pain and emotional stress that was caused by the burglary.\u00a0 It does stand as a shining reminder to us that when we try to violate the law and break the rights of privacy of others, we are embarking on the slippery slope. \u00a0As Nixon and his associates so painfully learned the price they paid was not work the crimes they engaged in.\u00a0 The \u201cWatergate\u201d affair became a national embarrassment.\u00a0 It wasted resources used in investigation and criminal prosecution that could have used to address the other problems that existed at the time that were no manufactured by Nixon and his associates.\u00a0 It reminds me of a slogan I read years ago, \u201c<em>There is no <strong>right<\/strong> way to do something that is <strong>wrong!<\/strong><\/em>\u201d\u00a0 I hope we can all remember this truth when we are tempted to break law for our own purposes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
